Nov. 5, 1919, Discharging. - An apparatus for controlling the gravity discharge of material from retorts comprises one or more reciprocating claw-plates D against which the descending material is pressed by a counterweighted pivoted flap E. The claw-plates are preferably arranged at an acute angle with the axis of the retort, and the reciprocating movement may be in one or more planes. When two or more claw-plates are used, the motions of adjacent ones may differ in direction.
