Charging.-In the process of carbonizing coal vibration is imparted to the retort during the period of charging and/or during the process of carbonizing before the coke structure has been formed, the effect of the vibration being greatly increased if pressure is applied to the top of the fuel. The retort may be vibrated by causing feed tubes 11 to be rocked so as to strike opposite sides of the retort 12 in turn, the tubes 11 being secured to a saddle 13 keyed to a shaft 130 which may be rocked, and on which the fixed radial rods 131 for agitating the charge in the hopper 10. Definite amounts of fuel are supplied to the retort 12 from a rotary valve 15, Fig. 5, through a sleeve 16 which enters the retort, the sleeve being balanced by a weight 160. Hammers 18 actuated by snugs 19 on a shaft 190 driven by a chain 20 from the feed valve 15 strike the retort 12. A swinging plate 21 actuated by a crank handle on a prolongation of one of the bosses 210 forms an additional or alternative means of vibration. A hopper 10, Fig. 8, supplies fuel to a swinging shoot 22 mounted on a shaft 220, the shoot striking the walls of the retort as it swings from one side to the other, the hopper being provided with a valve 23 operated by a handle 230. In the position of the shoot shows in full lines the fuel in it is at the angle of repose but falls into the retort when swung into a vertical position. In another modification, vertically-movable hammers interconnected with its charging means strike the upper ends of the retorts. The Provisional Specification refers to Specification 245,190.
