[Class 74 (ii)] A circular machine is provided with one or more circular series of latch-engaging instruments that are projected between the hooks and associated latches so that by reason of such entrance, or endwise movement of the needles, the latches are opened, insertion of the instruments being facilitated by providing one or more dwell portions on the needle-operating cams. The latch opening members may be fixed or movably mounted in a rotary or stationary trick ring, disc or other carrier located inside or outside the needle cylinder, each instrument being formed with a pointed or hooklike extremity according to the position of its carrier. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, latch-engaging instruments 7, one for each needle 3, are obliquely disposed in a trick ring 8 adjustably mounted on the verge 6 of a superposed cylinder machine, the instruments being projected seriatim by a cam 9 so as to open the latches prior to transference of the needles from one cylinder to another. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which latch opening instruments 21 formed with a hook-like ends 21b are mounted in a rotary carrier outside the needle circle eccentrically thereto and driven at the same linear speed as the needle cylinder, the members 21 acting on the closed or partly closed latches with a pulling action.
