[Class 74 (ii).] For tucking at desired intervals upon a circular machine, a pattern controlled cam 18 is provided for engaging a needle butt 12 common to all needles, together with a cam 20 operative upon butts 16, provided only on the needles which do not tuck. Needles 10 which are not raised by the cam 20 pass into a track 22 and to a cam 24 which raises the needles to a height sufficient to open the latches for yarn reception but not to clear them. In a superposed cylinder machine, the butts 12, 16 may be provided upon the needle sliders, and butts 17 of shorter length than the butts 16 may be provided upon the sliders of the non-tucking needles for actuation by the transfer cam. In another form, Fig. 2, the knitting butts 26, 28 of the sliders of the rib needle cylinder are of two lengths, and a pattern controlled cam 30 and an auxiliary cam 32 are provided. The shorter butts 28 of the sliders of the tucking needles are long enough to be engaged by the cam 30 and not by the cam 32, and when the cam 30 is in operative position all the needles are brought to clearing position, while with the cam 30 inoperative, the non- tucking needles only are moved to clearing position. The invention is also applicable to single cylinder machines and to dial and cylinder machines.
