[Class 74 (ii).] A rib machine of the superposed cylinder type having needle sliders with two lengths of butts is provided with a transfer cam 2 or 5, and additional cams 3, 4 or cam 6, 61 movable into position to separate the long-butted sliders from the short-butted sliders for subsequent action upon by the transfer cam. The cams 3, 4 associated with the upper cylinder are so disposed that sliders, e.g. the short-butted sliders only, not engaged by the cam 3 pass above the transfer cam 5 and are not transferred to the lower cylinder, while sliders not engaging the cam 4 are actuated bv the cam 5. The arrangement allows a fixed transfer cam to be used. The cam 6, 61 of the lower cylinder is a two-part cam, the part 61 being fixed and of such depth as to engage only the long-butted sliders, and the part 6 which engages all the sliders being slidable into and out of operative position.
