[Class 74 (ii)] A cylinder-and-dial machine for making ribbed instep hosiery and having dial needles with high and low knitting butts is provided with means for transferring loops from the lowbutted dial needles while knitting is continued on the high-butted dial needles. In one form, as applied to a machine having two-part dial needles as described in Specification 186,405, [Class 74 (ii)], the usual transfer cams 16, 17 are provided together with an additional independently movable withdrawing cam 20 operative upon the butts n<SP>10</SP> of the needle hooks. The cam 20 in operative position engages only the high butts n<SP>10</SP> on the hooks of the instep needles so that these hooks are withdrawn prematurely so that the loops are not transferred to the corresponding cylinder needles. The hooks of the heel dial needles are unaffected by the cam 20 and are actuated by the cam 17 to transfer their loops. In a machine employing latch needles in the dial, transfer cams 24, 25, 26 are provided of which cam 25 is movable independently of the other two. Cams 24, 26 can engage both high and low butted dial needles, and cam 25 engages the high butts only. Cam 24 pushes all of the needles out not quite far enough to transfer their loops, whereupon the high-butted needles are retracted by cam 25. The low-butted needles pass on to the cam 26 which moves them outwardly sufficiently to transfer their loops. Specifications 196,124 and 197,665, [both in Class 74 (ii)], also are referred to.
