[Classes 20 (i), 20 (iv), and 87 (i)] The vertical columns or pillars between the window openings of a building are of rhomblike or trapezoidal form in horizontal crosssection, one or both pairs of opposite sides being parallel and two diagonally-opposite angles being obtuse. The pillars E shown in Fig. 3 have both pairs of opposite sides parallel, and those in Fig. 4 have only one pair of opposite sides parallel. The pillars may be arranged, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that the window spaces are alternately splayed from within outwards and from without inwards, thereby forming alternately external and internal embrasures. The pillars may be built up of standard trapezoidal bricks G, the angles of which are respectively 45, 135, 67¢, and 112¢ degrees. Such bricks may be arranged to form pillars as shown in Figs: 6 and 7, or they may be subdivided and built up with ordinary rectangular bricks K as shown in Fig. 9. The interior rectangular bricks K shown in Fig. 9 may be replaced by reinforced concrete. The pillars may be arranged to constitute the external walls of a chemical laboratory as shown in Figs. 12 ,and 13, the benches Q being aligned with the outwardly-splayed windows P which are continued in vertical lines across one or more floors. The window openings P may be glazed with single panes, preferably co-planar with the inner wall face, and the alternate windows N may be co-planar with the outer wall face. Pillars at wall corners and other bends in a wall may be formed solely of bricks of the standard trapezoidal cross-section.
