Abstract

444,762. Floors ; walls ; blocks. BIRD & CO. (LONDON), Ltd., 7, Gracechurch Street, London.-(Indian Patent Stone Co., Ltd. ; Chartered Bank Buildings, Calcutta, India) Sept. 25, 1934, No. 27545. [Classes 20 (iii), 20 (iv), and 87 (i)] A concrete or like pre-cast tubular unit for walls, floors, and the like is provided with two pairs of longitudinally disposed flanges 2, 3, 4, 5 which are arranged at or near their outer longitudinal edges to provide tapered, dovetailed or inclined surfaces, so that the flanges of adjacent units are adapted to be held in contact by the direct or indirect interlocking of such surfaces. All the flanges may be tapered inwardly as shown in Fig. 2, and the flanges 2, 4 on one side of a unit may have additional tapering flanges 6, 7 to interengage with the flanges 3, 5 of an adjacent unit. The flanges 6, 7 may, alternatively, be provided on diagonally opposed flanges of a unit. If desired, the flanges 6, 7 may be omitted, and the joint formed by means of a key 13 of double-wedge form as shown in Fig. 4. A member 8 for interlocking the units of superposed rows comprises, as shown in Fig. 8, a rectangular portion provided at each end with semicircular bosses 9 . . . 12 adapted to project beyond the upper and lower faces of the member for engagement in the tubular portions of the units. The end unit 16 of a wall is formed with a slot 17 and modified flanges 21, 4<1> as shown in Fig. 1, and is connected with a corner unit 15 by dowels and /or a longitudinal key 19 engaging the slot 17 and a corresponding slot 18 in the corner unit 15. To accommodate a window frame 26 in a. wall, units 22, 23 are provided having only one pair of flanges as shown in Fig. 5, and the frame 26 is secured by wedges 27 in grooves 24, 25 in the units 22, 23. A thin transverse partition wall 31 may be connected to a main wall by mounting the edge of the partition in a longitudinal groove 30 formed by transversely projecting ridges 28, 29 as shown in Fig. 6. A modified unit is formed with its tubular portion of rectangular form as shown in Fig. 10, and the outer edges of the flanges are tapered so that adjacent units may be united by a key of double dovetail form which engages the tapered formation of the units. The member for uniting superposed rows of such units is of hollow rectangular tubular form and the projecting bosses are suitably shaped for engaging the rectangular tubular portions of the superposed units. In the case of a floor, the hollow units are supported by horizontal bosses, which engage the ends of the tubular portions of two or more of the floor units and are formed on the vertical faces of members interposed between two superposed rows of wall units. The spaces between the flanges of adjacent units may be filled with concrete which serves as an additional locking means for adjacent units. Some or all of the spaces in the structure may be filled with insulating material such as slag, cement, concrete, rubble, gravel, or the like.
