Abstract

448,355. Window fastenings. SMITH, F. C., 18, Bournevale Road, Streatham, London. Feb. 18, 1935, No. 5157. Addition to 367,730. [Class 44] A chain-type fastening for windows adapted to secure the window closed or allow limited opening movement comprises a flanged or dished plate A secured, by screws &c., through holes D, to the meeting rail of the upper sash, and formed with a slot B having recesses B<1>, B<2> the meeting rail of the lower sash having fixed thereto a flanged or dished plate E provided with an elongated slot F. The lefthand end of slot F is located near the upper edge of the plate, the right hand end, which is located near the lower edge of the plate, having a recess F<1> and terminal aperture F2. Studs G, H are connected by a chain or other flexible member, not shown, secured in apertures I, and co-operate respectively with slots B, F. The studs are conical or barrel shaped and of sufficient height to hold the chain &c. clear of the sashes to prevent jamming. To allow limited opening, stud G is engaged in recess B<1> and stud H is moved to the lefthand end of slot F. To hold the window closed, stud H is engaged in recess F<1>. For free opening, stud G is moved to recess B<2>, allowing stud H to be moved to aperture F<2> and lifted out. The detached end of the chain may then be hung on a pin-like projection G<3> on stud G. As an additional fastening for securing the windows closed a bolt J may be provided, shot by spring K into engagement with a slot C<1> in the flange of plate A, and released by knob L sliding in a slot E2. Bolt J may be secured in shot or retracted position by a sliding catch M engaging in front of, or behind, a projection J<1> on bolt J.
