[Classes 44 and 65 (ii)] Relates to combined hinge and fastening arrangements of the kind allowing a door to be opened about either edge, and provides an arrangement particularly suitable for the doors of motor vehicles in which fastening occurs automatically on closing the door. Fig. 4 shows a pair of bolts M near each vertical edge of the door, the bolts of each pair being connected to a corresponding disc F on the spindle of an operating handle (not shown) rotation of which simultaneously retracts the bolts from keepers K against the action of springs, such as N, serving to shoot the bolts. Each disc F has a shallow notch R and a deeper notch M<1>, Fig. 6. Co-operating with each disc is a sliding plunger G biassed by a spring H so that, when the door is opened, the plunger is projected from the free edge of the door. Rotation of a disc F to open the door brings notch R into line with a shoulder L<1> on the corresponding plunger. Projection of the plunger from the open edge of the door allows the shoulder to engage the notch and retain the bolts in retracted position. Slidably mounted on the door is a bar J having its ends normally in line with the notches M<1> as shown. Rotation of a disc F in opening the door causes that disc to displace bar J by cam action so that its other end engages notch M<1> in the adjacent disc F and prevents accidental release of the bolts K at the hinge edge of the door. On closing the door, the projecting plunger is forced inwards by a striking plate S, releasing the parts and allowing automatic return to the locking position shown. Bolts M and keepers K may have co-operating bevels to facilitate engagement. A modification is described in which the hinge fastenings comprise fixed hinge pins B, Fig. 3, engaged by hook-like members on the door, and held in engagement by spring-shot bolts C retractable by cables E connected to discs F.
