Abstract

439,160. Latches. HAMILTON, R. H., 16, Beverley Street, St. Albans, Christchurch, New Zealand. Aug. 15, 1935, No. 23013. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1934. [Class 44] A latch, particularly for a motor-car door, is moved into engagement with the catch plate by a member movably mounted on the latch housing and adapted to be engaged by a projection on the catch plate as the door is closing to effect the movement of the latch. The latch has a wedge-shaped end so that the door is pressed firmly on to its frame as the latch is advanced. An arm 8 pivoted about an axis 9 has a crank 14 connected by a link 15 to a lever 16 which is connected by a link 19 to a cam 11 pivoted to the latch casing at 10. Normally a formation 21 on the end of the arm 8 engages over the end of a latch 4 and retains it in its retracted position but as the door'is closed the arm 8 encounters a projection 6 on the door frame and the lever 8 is moved to displace the cam 11 which acts on the inner end of the latch to force it outwards. Preferably the link 15 is made resilient to ensure steady contact between the catch plate and a sloped end 20 on the latch. The cam surface is shaped so that the bolt cannot be forced to disengaged position except during the initial outward movement and the outer end of the latch has a bevel 22 so that should the door be closed with the latch slightly projecting it can be forced back by striking the catch plate. To withdraw the latch a lever 27 on a handle spindle 26 can be brought into engagement with the lever 16 to move the cam 11 which has an inner cam surface 23 engaging a roller 24 on the end of the latch. The link 19 may have a sliding connection at the cam end and be normally kept extended by a spring 29 which acts to cushion over-vigorous movements of the handle. As alternatives to the various elements described, the latch may be pivoted instead of sliding, the member 8 and cam 11 may slide instead of being pivoted and the cam may be replaced by a lever device. A key lock may be used for locking the handle.
