Latches, sliding, of the kind held at halfcock until released by a slam-bolt on closing the door, have a rocking lever intermediate the latch and slam-bolt, a light spring keeping the slam-bolt out of contact with the striking-plate when the door is closed to minimize wear. The latch-bolt a, manually operable by the toothed cam c, has a leg a<1> engaged by the end f<3> of the lever f, which is pivoted at g and pressed upwards by the spring h. The end k<1> of the slam-bolt k engages the recess f<2> of the rocking lever when in the position shown. If the door is slammed, the bolt k engages the striking-plate and is forced inwards, tilting the rocking lever out of engagement with the latch a which is then shot by its springs b. A light spring m holds the bolt k out of contact with the striking-plate and the leg a<1> engages over the top of the tilted lever f to prevent its return until the latch a is manually withdrawn.
