Abstract

8719. Augenbraun, P. F. April 13. Night-latches.-Relates to night-latches of the type provided with a lever for dead-locking the bolt, this lever being kept out of action while the door is open by means of a slide adapted to be pressed in by the striking-plate. The dead-locking lever 5 is pivoted to the casing and adapted, with its arm 22, to engage a projection 4 on the bolt when this is shot. The other arm of the lever has a pin 17 which, in the locking-position, engages centrally-disposed recesses 24 in the followers 8, 10 of the handle and key mechanism respectively, so that, in withdrawing the latch in the ordinary way, the lever is first disengaged by the follower. When the door is opened, the slider 3 springs out under the action of a spring 21, its inner end 15<a> engaging the pin 17 and holding the lever 5 free from the bolt. When the door is slammed, the slide is pressed inwards by a projection on the bolt, and, on the bolt entering the socket in the striking-plate, it is again engaged by the lever. The slide 3 is wider than the bolt, and is guided by a lug 20 thereon, which encircles one of the rods 6 of the latch bolt, the spring 21 acting on both the bolt and the slide. A bolt 25, mounted in the casing, serves to hold the main bolt in the withdrawn position by means of the lug 26 thereon engaging a lug 27 on the bolt, the two lugs being bevelled to allow the retraction of the latch-bolt even should the bolt 25 be raised while the door is fastened. The parts are made symmetrical, so that the latch can be used on doors which open inwards or outwards.
