11,308. Sterling, F. H. May 14. Latches; locks, key.-The latch bolt b is locked against operation by the handles by means of a lever or levers e which are adapted to engage a notch g in the bolt. The levers e are held out of the operating position by means of the slide i, which prevents the levers from falling until it is brought with a notch h over the ends of the levers. The slide i is slid along by means of the end n of the latch, which is adapted to engage a pawlj pivoted to the bolt and maintained in either the operating or inoperating position by the knob m, which can slide to-and-fro on either side of the pivot point. The levers e can only be released to withdraw the bolt by means of a key acting on the projections o, the key also withdrawing the slide i by means of the projection p. The pawl j is provided with a projection j', which, when the slide i is moved, engages with the knob m and moves it back to the disengaging position. When applied to a night latch of the " Yale " type, the slide i, Fig. 3, acts as an auxiliary bolt and is itself locked by the tumbler e. The slide when shot prevents the door from being opened on the inside, but can be withdrawn by the ordinary key acting on the follower r, Fig. 7.
