Abstract

13,135. Smith, F. June 10. Latches; locks, key.-Relates to locks and latches in which the latch may be secured from the inside of the room, and released, by means of a key, from the outside. The latch B, Fig. 2, is secured by a catch A actuated from the inside of the room, preferably by an indicating-pointer to turn the catch into position to engage the body of the latch. In some locks, a double-ended lever E is actuated by means of a key inserted in the keyhole Q of the separate lock F, first to move the lever outwards and disengage the catch A from the latch, and then by a further movement of the key the latch B is withdrawn to allow the door to open. When it is required to withdraw the stop without using a separate lock, the lever E is dispensed with, and a peg is inserted in the bolt W of the top look Q<1> to engage the lever A and to throw it clear of the latch B, when the bolt is shot forwards by means of the key of the lock Q<1>. In the lock shown in Fig. 5, the latch B is prevented from being withdrawn, by using the handle, by means of a follower M, engaging a projection T on the latch, the follower, in the position shown, having no power on the latch, and being returned by the spring S to its original position when the latch is withdrawn by means of a key. In locks to be used from either side of the door, the catch is made in two separate parts A, A<2>, Fig. 6, fitted with a duplex spring, and attached to separate handles or indicators.
