COMBINED LOCK-LATCH AND HASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,926, dated February 24, 1885.
Appnefmqn ined Jun@ 12, issn. (No model.) 1
1o all whom t may concern: l
Be it known that I, HIRAM C. STOUFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cortland, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvennentsi in Combined Lock-Latch and Hasp, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to devices which are known as hasp-locks, but my improvements are directed to the combination of a slotted latch-bar with a lock having springheld tumblers and anindependentlatch-keeper bolt to lock the two, when required, and to provide such an independentlatoh-k eeper bolt as will answer the purpose of acombinedlock and latch, with such functions made interchangeable, so as to dispense with padlocks.
The matters of improvement claimed are hereinafter specifically described and ascertained with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents the device when atcached to a gate or door, the lock portion thereof being secured to 'the jamb and the latch portion to the door. Fig. 2 is a side view when used asalatch; Fig. 3, a side view of the same when used as a lock; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the independent latchkeeper bolt. Figs. 5 and Gare bottom and end views representing the relative positions `of the latch, bar, and independent latchkeeper bolt when the device is used as alatch. Figs. 7 and 8 are bottom and end views representing the relative positions of said parts when the device is used as a lock. Fig-9 represents the lock proper with its cap removed, showing the independent latch-keeper bolt lretained by the tumblers, the arms of the tumblers being broken away to show the action of the spring which ejects the latchkeeper bolt. Fig. 10 represents a similar view to show the manner in which the latchkeeper bolt is released from the tumblers by the application of a key. Fig. 1l is a side view ot' a portion of the latch-bar, Fig. 12, a side view of the lock, latch-keeper bolt, and a portion of the latch-bar; and Fig. 13 is an end view of the slotted latch-bar.
The gate or door is designated by the letter formed or cast with said tumblers, Which are 1 actuated by a key, F, to release the latchkeeper bolt D, and which are caused to retain said bolt D by the pressing force of side springs, b2 b2, as in Fig. 9'.
It will b understood clearly from Fig. 9 in what manner the independent latch-keeper bolt D is held by the hooked tumblersb b, and from Fig. 10 in what manner it is ejected by the spring m, pressing against the end of said bolt D when a key is applied to turn and open the tumblers.
Further description of the lock proper is deemed unnecessary, as any suitable Aconstruction of lock may be used. The latch-bar E is pivotally secured to the door and its movements controlled by the ordinary hasp, d, while it has also thumb-buttons e e,connected for operation from the inside or outside by a ste1n,f, passing through a slot of the door or gate, as shown in Fig. 11. The latch-bar has a slot, g, as shown in Figs. 1,'2, and 3, of sufficient length between lock and latch-hasp to permit of the use of an independent latch-keeper bolt by its insertion into the case of the lock to be caught by the tumblers and by its ejection from the case when unlocked. This latch-keeper bolt D, which is clearly shown in the detail, Fig. 4, is made with hooks h h, to engage with the hooks of the tumblers b b, and in order that it may lock the latch it has formed or cast with it a hook or projection, t, adapted to guide and hold it in the slot g, under the end of the latch-bar, or in connection with said bar,as clearly shown in the details, Figs. 7 and 8. It has also the provision of a latch-keeper having the bevelslide surface 7c and the keeper-shoulder 7c, as shown in the details, Figs. 4, 6, and 8.
It having been stated that the object of the invention is to produce a combined latch and v IOO 25 latch-keeper.
y.for free movement, as described.
shoved into the lock proper to engage with .and be held by the hooked tumblers, and be- 2o; lettera-nd the lock proper are thereby securely locked. To unlock, it is only necessary to ap- Vhen the device is used as :iJ latch merely,-
as shownin Figs. 2, 5, and 6, .thelatchke'eper bolt D is inserted in the lock and held by its hooks, as shown in the detail Fig. 9. The latch as it falls in the usual manner slides over the bevel-slide k' and is caught and'held by thev shoulder k, as in any ordinary keeper. There are thumb-pieces e e', `to operate the latch-bar from both sides, as shown in Fig. 11, through a slot in the gate or door'. y
When the device is to be used to lock 'the latch, the latch-keepcr bolt D is ejected by releasing the spring-tumblers, and the latchkeeper bolt is then placed in the slot g, with its hook z' under the end of the 1atch-bar E, as in Fig. 7, within which slot it has capacity Being thus ing also held in the slot'g ofthe latch-bur, the
cause the latch-keeper bolt to be ejected by the spring m, when the bolt is again used as :L
D, provided with hook projections forengage- 35 `ment with said tumbler-lock A.md with the latch-bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the lock spring hooked tumblers b b and a latch-bar, E, having a. slot, g, of an independent latch-keeper bolt, D, forined with the hooks hh, hook projection i, and beveled shouldered keeper k 7c', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my 45 hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. l
