[Class 44] A spring lock for refrigerator doors &c. comprises a catch movably mounted on a carrier displaceable against a spring urging the carrier and catch into locking position, the catch being deflectable either with or relatively to the carrier to permit the door to open under spring action when a detent, normally preventing such deflection, is released to initiate the opening movement of the door. The opening of the door is preferably effected by spring hinges. A carrier 6 guided in a casing 3 by a rear hole 24 and by rollers 25 is pressed outwards by a spring 8 and carries a catch 4 pivoted to the carrier at 7 and normally held rigid therewith by shoulders 10, 11 engaging respectively with a pin 12 and a pivoted hook 16. The device acts as a sliding latch engaging a keeper 5 as the door is closed. The hook 16 is disengaged from the shoulder 11 when a pin 18, housed in the handle of the door, is pressed against a tail-piece 15 on the hook, whereupon the catch 4 can tilt to allow the door to open under the action of its spring hinges. Springs 20 and 17 restore the catch 4 and hook 16 to their original positions when the door is open. Alternatively the carrier may be pivoted and the catch movable longitudinally with respect thereto. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which a catch 31 is pivoted at 33 to a carrier 32 pivoted to the case at 36. A detent 39 prevents tilting of the carrier against a restoring spring 38 until it is moved by a pin 41 connected to a spring button 43 on the front of the door. A spring 34 enables the catch 31 to act as a pivoted latch as the door is closed.
