Abstract

435,673. Sliding latches. BLACK, F. R., Kilkerran, Salisbury Gardens, Belfast. Jan. 4, 1935, No. 310. [Class 44] A sliding latch bolt is retained in the retracted position while the door is open, by a clutch. The clutch comprises sets of interleaved plates 5, 6 secured to the bolt and casing respectively. The plates are pressed into contact by a plate 7 and spring preseed lever 8. The lever spring is housed in a hollow projection 8<a> which is pressed inwards by the striking plate and releases the clutch when the door is closed. To reduce noise the shoulders 17 and the striking plates are rubber lined. The latch is locked from the outside by a lever 12 which lifts a lever 14 so that a catch 14<c> engages behind a projection 15. In a modification the clutch comprises a wedge-shaped member which is secured to the casing and engages a wedge-shaped opening in the bolt. In a further modification the clutch comprises a loosely mounted toothed wheel 21 which engages teeth on the bolt. The wheel 21 is recessed on the one side to receive a conical member fixed to the casing and on the other side to receive alooselymounted conical member 23 to which the lever 8 is pivoted. The lever 8 under the pressure of its spring locks the members 23, 21, and the fixed conical member together and holds the bolt in the retracted position.
