Abstract

441,101. Cycle &c. brakes. HOPPER, F., Mount House, and ELSWICK-HOPPER CYCLE & MOTOR CO., Ltd., Brigg Road, both in Barton-on-Humber. Nov. 5, 1934, No. 31750. [Class 136 (i)] In cycle &c. brakes of the type in which a pair of two-armed levers carrying the brake blocks are actuated by a rotary cam arranged between their ends, the cam and /or the cooperating surfaces on the levers are so shaped or arranged as to compensate for the tendency of the cam to rock one lever more than the other, due to the fact that the cam acts on the two levers at different distances from their respective fulcra. A supporting-plate 10 secured to the cycle frame is apertured to receive screw studs 11 receiving nuts 13 and acting as pivots for two levers 14, 15, the lower ends of which carry adjustably-mounted brake blocks 17 and the upper ends of which are acted upon by a rotary cam 24, which is pivoted on a stud 26, 27 screwed into the plate 10 and is provided with an outer plate 32 having an arm 33 connected to a Bowden wire &c. transmission 34. In order to equalize the action of the cam on the two levers, the cam 24 is off-set to the left on its pivot stud, as shown; or the same effect may be obtained by suitably shaping the co-operating surfaces of the cam and levers. The parts of the brake are located in the off position by flat &c. interengaging surfaces on the cam and levers. The levers are retracted by a spring 38 attached to posts 36, which are fixed to the upper ends of the levers and pass through slots in the plate 10. The lower ends of the legs of the plate 10 are provided with bent-over lugs 39 which guide the levers 14, 15.
