[Class 135] A valve in an exhaust conduit is sealed against leakage from the exhaust conduit by mercury in an U-tube 17, 24, one limb of which opens just above a sealing space 21 while the other has a valve 25 which when the pump is stopped is turned to admit atmospheric pressure to a mercury vessel 18 and raise the mercury into sealing position. A conduit 22 is provided with a valve to allow the mercury to drain off on restarting. In a modification, a valve is provided in the exhaust conduit between the connections therewith of the two limbs, and is closed when the pump is stopped to allow pump leakage to raise the mercury into sealing position.
