Abstract
500,371. Regulating vacuum pumps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SCHIFF, W. Aug. 18, 1937, No. 22670. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A liquid-seal valve for the vacuum container of a mercuryvapour electric-con. verter is arranged in a chamber 2, connected by conduits 5 and 6 respectively to a backing pump and a vapour pump, and comprises a U-tube 9 having an electrically actuated displacer 12 in one arm which is adapted to raise the level of the liquid, preferably mercury, in the other arm 8 which terminates in the chamber 2 to seal the end 7 of the conduit 6 leading to the vapour pump. The end of the conduit 6 is arranged directly over the outlet from the U-tube arm 8 so that a rapid sealing of the tube 6 is obtained by the liquid forced up from the arm 8 before the level in the chamber 2 as a whole rises. The solenoid 13 of the electrically actuated displacer 12 is arranged in parallel with the circuit of the motor 14 of the backing pump so that on the pump being shut down the liquid seal valve is actuated to seal the vapour container and maintain the vacuum therein. Contacts 15 in this circuit are also adapted to be broken to effect sealing when the pressure in the chamber 2 rises above a predetermined value.
