Abstract

437,175. Multi cylinder engines. KRUPP GERMANIAWERFT AKT.-GES., F., Gaarden, Kiel, Germany. May 23, 1935, No. 15049. Convention date, June 22, 1934. [Class 7 (ii)] Torsional oscillations in fourstroke engines having an uneven number of cylinders and equally spaced cranks are equalized by making the ignition intervals irregular, the ignition in one cylinder taking place after an interval from that of the first cylinder, which, measured in terms of the crank-shaft rotation, is an uneven multiple of the angle between the cranks. The ignition sequence is then chosen to keep the energy inputs of the principal intermediate harmonics as small as possible. In a five-cylinder engine, the normal ignition sequence of I-II-IV-V-III, may be altered by making the time interval between cylinders III and I three-fifths of a revolution to make its input counteract that of the other cylinders, the sequence then being I-II-IIIIV-V. This reduces the energy input due to harmonics of the 7¢th order but increases those of the 6¢th or 8¢ order. The energy input of the 7¢th order may be further reduced by employing the sequence I-II-III-V-IV but this increases that of the 6¢th and 8¢th order.
