Dec. 18, 1933, No. 17523/34. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1933. Divided out of 425,340. [Class 39 (i)] A valve has at least three grids between a cathode and an anode, the third grid counting from the cathode having a non-uniform spacing of the meshes. As shown, four grids 2 .. 5 are mounted between an indirectly-heated cathode 1 and the anode 6, the third grid 4 being so wound as to produce a variable-mu effect. The cross-section of the grids may be elliptical. Dimensions of the grids are given. The grids 3, 5 may be of fine mesh and are maintained at a constant positive potential and the grid 4 at a negative potential, so that a " virtual cathode" is produced in the region of the grid 4. The input is connected between the grid 4 and the cathode, and the output between the grid 4 and the anode. A modulating voltage may be applied between the grid 2 and the cathode. The inner surface of the glass envelope may be carbonized.
