Vacuum tubes. - To increase the heat-radiating capacity of an electrode such as an anode or grid, it is roughened either by sand-blasting or the like, or by superficial oxidation followed by reduction. In the case of a grid, the treatment also diminishes the emission of secondary electrons. Fig. 1 shows a roughened anode 13 in close proximity to a filament-cathode 11, with a grid 12 interposed. In another valve the anode and grid consist of alternate slats arranged radially about a straight filament; in the drawing, each is shown with a right-angled extension at its outer edge.
