Abstract

421,210. Semi - trailer couplings. WHITTLE, R. W., Fern Acre, Crofts Bank Road, Urmston, Lancashire, WAKEFIELD, E., Birchdale, Elworth, and FODENS, Ltd., Elworth Works, both in Sandbach, Cheshire. Sept. 7, 1933, No. 24782. [Class 79 (iii)] In semi-trailer coupling devices of the ball-and-socket type, a ball socketed pivot e mounted on the rear end of the tractor is formed with a wedge shaped head f with parallel sides, adapted to enter a flared guideway k attached to the under fore-part of the trailer and to be finally retained in the closely fitting rear end thereof by transverse bolts n moved into blocking position by operation from the side of the vehicle of a shaft m, having right and left hand threaded engagement with arms n<1> on the bolts. The guideway k is built up of Z-shaped side members k<1> tapering in depth from front to rear with the upper flanges directed outwardly and secured by bolts k<3> to a top plate k<2>. The device may be associated with a turntable and springs such as described in Specification 416,987, [Group XXXII]. The rear end of the tractor may terminate in a ramp.
