Abstract

530,924. Tractor and trailer vehicles. KIRBY, W. H. July 6, 1939, No. 19693. [Class 79 (iii)] A goods vehicle comprises a tractor unit all the wheels of which are steerable and a goods-carrying trailer unit, said units being detachable at will but being capable of being locked together when the tractor is backed up and coupled to the trailer unit, to form a completely rigid vehicle. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the vehicle comprises a tractor portion A and a detachable trailer portion B, side bars 7 on the trailer sliding into socket members 6 on the tractor. The tractor and trailer may be rigidly connected together by pins or bolts passed through the bars 7 and sockets 6, or, as shown in Fig. 4, a beam 11 on the trailer .passing through a hole 17 in the tractor cab 1 may be locked in position by a lever 14 having a pin 13 engaging a slot 12 in the beam. The tractor may have three or four wheels and the trailer two or four main wheels, an auxiliary supporting wheel 4 being provided which is raised and lowered automatically as the two vehicle parts are coupled and uncoupled.
