Description
A. E. RUTTER Oct. 8, 1935.
PLOW
Filed April 5, I935 INVENTOR ALI/AH E. Burrs? A TTORNEY Patented Oct. 8, 1935 PATENT OFFICE PLOW Alvah E. Rutter, Rockford, Ill., assignor to J. I. Case Company, Racine, Wis., a corporation Application April 5, 1935, Serial No. 14,740
3 Claims.
My present invention relates to improvements in a plow especially adapted for use in connection with tractors of small size, and which may be readily converted into a two or single-bottom plow according to requirements; my object being to initially supply a single-bottom plow, so that subsequently, should the user desire a twobottom plow, it will only be necessary to obtain an additional beam, including a bottom or other earth working equipment, and attach it to the frame oppositely to the original beam, as will hereinafter more fully appear, but it will be understod that when a two-bottom plow is preferred initially it may be so furnished.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, Figure l is a plan view (with parts omitted for clearness) of a single-bottom plow embodying my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the implement converted into a two-bottom plow.
In said drawing the numeral 5 indicates a conventional wheeled axle upon which is secured a preferably open-sided rectangular frame comprising the members 6, 'l, and brace 8, to which frame members and brace is secured a beam IE! of any desired construction and arrangement.
In providing a single-bottom plow as shown in Fig. l, I bolt beam 10 to the axle 5, and also to frame, 6, I, at H, I2, and to brace 8 at I3, to oocupy a position at the right-hand side of the implement, which beam supports the usual bottom I4 and gauge-wheel I5, and which described assemblage constitutes what is generally known as a single-bottom plow.
When a two-bottom plow is required I remove beam H], detach frame parts 6, I, 8 from axle 5, and invert the frame so that it will be positioned on axle 5 as shown in Fig. 2, and then bolt beam H] to the left-hand side of the frame and axle,
H 40 so that said beam with members 6, 1, 8 will form a continuous frame. An additional beam l8 having a plow bottom 19 thereon is then bolted to the right-hand side of the frame, at 20, 2|, and the assemblage thus described re- 45 sults in a two-bottom plow. It will be understood,
of course, that a suitable hitch, as 25, may be secured in any desired manner to the frame and beam [0.
In the novel manner describedI provide a sim- 0 ply convertible plow without disassembling its I main frame, and, in relation to the latter, one or two beams as desired may be readily secured in position by a system of bolts or equivalent detachable fastening devices so that the structure may be converted at will into a one or two-bottom plow.
It will be understood that a dealer supplying a plow of the type referred to will have in stock a 5 supply of beams l8 each including a bottom l9, so that the user of a single-bottom plow, when requiring a two-bottom plow, may procure a beam and readily attach the same to the frame in the manner described, and that it will be unnecessary 10 to carry beams of varying sizes in stock, as the standard beam I8 will serve the purpose of converting the plow into two bottoms or for repair as required.
I claim as my invention: 15
1. In a plow, an open-sided frame adapted to be inverted, a beam including a plow bottom overlapping the open portion of said frame and normally associated with the right-hand side of the frame, and detachable means connecting the 20 beam to the frame whereby when the latter is inverted its open portion will be positioned at the left-hand side of the implement and the beam may be secured thereto to form a part of the frame. 25
2. In a plow, a frame adapted to be inverted, a beam including a plow bottom normally associated with one side of the frame and forming part thereof, detachable means connecting the beam to the frame whereby when the latter is in- 3Q verted the beam may be secured to the frame in position opposite to that occupied originally, and an additional beam including a plow bottom detachably secured at the side of the frame originally occupied by said first mentioned beam and with the latter forming a two-bottom plow.
3. In a plow, a wheeled frame including a transverse member, a longitudinally extending member associated with the transverse member and terminating in angular relation to the latter, said frame being adapted to be inverted, a beam at one side of the plow including a plow bottom and normally associated with the transverse and angular members and forming part of the frame, detachable means connecting the beam to the frame members whereby when said frame is inverted the beam may be secured at the opposite side of the frame to form part thereof, and an additional beam including a plow bottom detachably secured at the side of the frame originally occupied by said first-mentioned beam and with the latter forming a two-bottom plow.
