Abstract

420,553. Spray carburetters. JOHNSON, R., c /o Ashley & Johnson, 43rd Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 18, 1933, No. 35574. [Class 7 (iii)] Air entering at 52 is divided into two streams one, of relatively small dimensions, flowing in the direction of arrow H and having capillary fuel ducts leading thereto, the other and larger stream flowing in the direction of arrow K through a curved passage 11 to meet the smaller stream, charged with fuel, before issuing through the outlet 53. Extending across the passage 11 is a bridge piece 16 containing a cavity 19 to which fuel is fed from the float chamber A through ducts 25, 26, 22. The flow of fuel is controlled by a needle valve 31 actuated by an arm 44 on a screwed sleeve 40 in which the needle valve is adjustably mounted. Independent adjustment of the valve is effected by releasing wing nut 46 and rotating the needle by pin 43. A flanged upper face of the bridge piece 16 supports a non-fibrous or metallic wick 55 provided with primary and secondary capillary ducts 57, 58 respectively. The primary ducts communicate with a recess 18 and extend throughout the whole depth of the wick, the upper extremities being disposed transversely of the wick as at 59, 60, Fig. 4, to conduct the air constituting the smaller stream over the fuel that has risen within the ducts 57. The secondary ducts 58 serve to retain fuel that has overflowed from the primary ducts. The air is caused to follow closely the open ends of the ducts by a ridge piece 61 secured by screws 62 and inclined to compensate for the angle at which the engine may be set in a boat. The small air stream and the fuel carried thereby may be regulated by a plate 64 actuated by a bell-crank lever 68. To prevent large drops of fuel from falling into and collecting in the passage 11, a grating 70 is provided consisting of bars 73 and a ledge 71 adapted to be secured over the flange of the wick element.
