Abstract

417,007. Pistons. BOHN ALUMINUM & BRASS CORPORATION, 2512, East Grand Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. July 6, 1933, Nos. 19150 and 19151. Convention dates, Sept. 7, 1932 and Jan. 30, 1933. [Class 122 (i).] A piston comprises a head 10, a pair of chordal webs 14 carrying the gudgeon pin bosses and connected to arcuate thrust faces 16, 17 which are separated from the head by slots 18. One of the thrust faces may be slotted at 32. The edges of the thrust faces are curved and converge towards the slot 18, the edge being formed by relieving the faces 30. This is preferably done in casting. The chordal webs are strengthened by webs 21, 22 connected to the head and webs 27, 28 connected to the skirt 26. The head of the piston above the slots is reinforced as at 25 and the gudgeon pin bosses are further supported by webs 23, 24, the web 23 extending across the top of the piston. The skirt beneath the gudgeon pin bosses is strengthened by ribs 29. Strengthening and balancing ribs 33<a> are also provided. Further ribs such as 33, 34, Fig. 14, may be provided for balancing wherein slots 35 are either cast or cut away. The material may be removed from the inner circumference or by reducing the thickness of the rib for balancing purposes.
