Abstract

1422776 Pistons ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 6 March 1973 [12 April 1972] 10518/72 Heading F2T In a piston comprising a crown 10, a ring- carrier band 11 and a skirt 17 integral with the band, the gudgeon pin bosses are formed on two spaced apart projections 15 integral with and extending from the crown are spaced inwardly from the skirt which is provided with at least one aperture 18 for insertion of a gudgeon pin in the bores 16 of the bosses. The end of the skirt nearest the crown has an expansion controlling insert 20 which is elliptical or oval and lies near to the outer face of the skirt at the thrust faces and near to inner face in the plane of the gudgeon pin axis and is of a material having a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than that of the skirt material. The piston may be of aluminium alloy and the insert of steel.
