Abstract

1,125,892. Pistons. HEPWORTH & GRANDAGE Ltd. 23 Dec., 1965 [31 Dec., 1964], No. 53087/64. Heading F2T. A piston, particularly a light alloy piston, has two or more expansion controlling inserts 7, 8 engaging or disposed adjacent each gudgeon pin boss 3 and having rates of thermal expansion different from one another and from that of the piston, the inserts extending between the thrust faces 6 and being at different levels with respect to the longitudinal axis of the piston. The lower inserts 8 are made from a metal having a coefficient of thermal expansion lower than that of the metal of the piston but higher than that of the upper inserts 7. The inserts are cast into the gudgeon pin bosses 3 and their ends abut ribs 9 on the skirt 5. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the inserts 7 and 8 abut each other along their adjacent edges and their ends are embedded in the ribs 9. The different rates of expansion of the upper and lower inserts 7 and 8 may be achieved, instead of or in addition to making the inserts from metals having different coefficients of expansion, by suitably shaping and/or making the inserts of different thickness and/or perforating the lower inserts.
