Abstract

Class 122 (1) In a light metal piston for an internal combustion engine whose head 1 is partially separated from its skirt 4 by transverse slots 5, the skirt has insertions 7 of a metal whose co-efficient of thermal expansion is different from that of the skirt and the resistance of the skirt to deformation owing to bi-metallic action is increased towards the open end of the skirt by decreasing the effectiveness of the insertions near the open end of the skirt and/or strengthening the part of the skirt near the open end thereof. The insertions which embrace the gudgeon pin bosses 3 are cast into projections 6 of the skirt and have holes 8 to facilitate adhesion. The middle part 72 of insertions is of progressively decreasing horizontal length towards the lower end thereof, Fig. 1, or this part has considerably less axial height than the side portions 71 of the insertions, Fig. 2. Instead of or in addition to shaping the central part of the insertions the lower part of the skirt may be strengthened by transverse ribs.
