Abstract

1364429 Pistons WELLWORTHY Ltd 11 Oct 1971 [29 Sept 1970] 46371/70 Heading F2T [Also in Division B3] A light-metal piston has at least one piston ring groove and is made of at least two parts 12, 14 fastened together, each part defining a part 26 of the groove and at least one flank of the groove being provided with a wear-resistant coating 27. When the number of grooves is n, e.g. grooves 20, 20a, then the piston is assembled from n+1 parts, e.g. parts 12, 14, 14a. The parts may define an annular, internal recess (32), Fig. 5 (not shown), and the mating surfaces of the parts may be stepped either to avoid the cavity or intersect it on the skirt side of the step. Alternatively the mating surface may be located to correspond with the diameter of the bottoms of the grooves, or it may extend obliquely from the base of the groove (20a) to a combustion recess (16), Figs. 2, 3 (not shown). The coating 27 may comprise cast iron, chromium, molybdenum or nickel.
