Abstract

1,132,351. Piston rings. WELLWORTHY Ltd. 21 Dec., 1965 [7 Jan., 1965], No. 812/65. Heading F2T. A piston ring 1 of ferrous material e.g. cast iron or steel, has a peripheral surface of wearresistant material 2 e.g. chromium or molybdenum which, in order to reduce the running-in time, is provided with a shallow concave circumferentially extending recess 3 disposed between axially spaced lands 4. One or both of the ring side faces may also be coated with the material 2 and the corners may be chamfered as at 5. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a circumferential groove (6) in the periphery of the ring is filled with the material (2) and the recess (3) is bounded by lands (7) of the ring material. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 924,016.
