Abstract

1356320 Seals for bearings TEXTRON Inc 7 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 56793/71 Heading F2B A reversible seal element for a bearing comprises an annular disc having radially outer and inner annular portions of elastomeric material, the inner portion being provided at its bore with an axially-directed continuous seal lip and the outer annular portion having a circumferential groove which is vented axially in opposite directions by angularly-spaced channels 40, 41. The seal element may be mounted as a shield as shown in Fig. 2 in clearance relation with the surface 21 of the race ring 10 or it may be reversed as shown in Fig. 1 so that the seal lip makes rubbing contact. Identification of the seal element may be facilitated by use of lugs 43, 44, colour, or by the shape of the vent channels. The seal element may be reversible to provide a seal and a shield as shown, two differently loaded seals, or two shields.
