Abstract

1508611 Pistons PERKINS ENGINES Ltd 24 Feb 1976 [4 Feb 1975] 4680/75 Heading F2T An I.C. engine piston 1 having a crown portion 2, a skirt portion 5 and gudgeon pin bosses 6 and 7 has reinforcement portions 8, (9) (Fig. 2, not shown) attached to and merging with the skirt portion 5. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the reinforcement portions are constituted by ribs which merge smoothly with the gudgeon pin bosses 6, 7. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown) the reinforcement portions are thickened parts of the skirt merging smoothly into the piston crown. The piston 1 incorporates a combustion chamber 3 having an overhanging lip 4 which may be constituted by a separate member 40. Bores in the piston may connect oil control grooves with the interior (Fig. 5, not shown).
