Abstract

1,203,926. Pistons. CROSS MFG. CO. (1938) Ltd. 14 May, 1969, No. 24577/69. Heading F2T. A piston 11, particularly for internal combustion engines, has a springy split steel sleeve 13 which closely surrounds the piston periphery 14, extends substantially from the crown 13 to the bottom of the skirt, and is prevented from axial movement on the piston by means forming an integral part of the sleeve. The sleeve acts as a bearing ring and a gas sealing and oil scraper ring and has two projections 16 engaging in complemental grooves 17 in the piston. The split in the sleeve may be axial with a circumferential step 15. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the part of the sleeve between the grooves (17) is corrugated (19). In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the piston periphery is formed between the grooves (17) with further grooves (20). The sleeve may be coated with P.T.F.E.
