Abstract
531,345. Piston rings. WELLWORTHY PISTON RINGS, Ltd., BLACKITH, F., NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and HALL, L. F. July 19, 1939, No. 20932. [Class 122. (i)] A piston ring for an internal-combustion or other fluid pressure engine comprises two ring portions 11, 12, contacting only along a conical surface and each thinner than the width of the groove in the piston so that when assembled each ring contacts with one of the radial faces 17, 19 of the groove and is spaced from the other. The outer ring 12 is split at one place and is preferably inert or has a slight outward spring. The inner ring 11 may be split in one place and have an outward spring or may be split into two or more arcuate parts. The pressure of the ring 12 on the cylinder is due chiefly to the inertia of the ring parts and the relative weights of the ring parts and the angle of the cone may be such that the pressure at opposite ends of the strokes may differ from one another. As shown, for an oil scraper ring, the pressure may be less at the top dead centre than at the bottom. If the inner ring 11 has no outward spring, a split outwardly springing ring may be arranged between it and the bottom of the piston groove. If the cylinder and piston have the same coefficient of expansion the back of the ring 11 may contact with the bottom of the cylinder groove. This groove may be formed with a lip 20 to limit the outward movement of the ring 11 during the assembly of the parts.
