Abstract
1,237,238. Making pistons. HEPWORTH & GRANDAGE Ltd. 17 Oct., 1969 [31 Oct., 1968], No. 51757/68. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] A light metal piston has at least the thrust bearing areas of its skirt coated with a spray deposit of chromium. The coating which may be between 0À0005 and 0À004 inch thick may extend over the whole of the outer peripheral surface of the skirt or be restricted to the thrust areas. The or each coating may be subdivided axially into spaced bands or segments. The coating may additionally extend over the ring groovecarrying portion of the piston. In making the piston, a piston blank is produced from light metal, e.g., by forging, pressing or casting, and the skirt is first ground or machined or otherwise formed to the required shape, then spray-coated with chromium and finally ground or otherwise finished. A piston according to the invention is stated to be suitable for use directly in a light metal cylinder bore.
