Abstract
948,252. Casting composite articles. M. G. WHITFIELD, and H. WESLAKE. Dec. 10, 1962 [Aug. 16, 1962], No. 46568/62. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A light metal piston comprises a protection cap 2 of titanium or titanium alloy which surrounds the head of the piston and is secured thereto by casting. As shown in Fig. 4, a mechanical interlock is provided between the cap and the piston body by mushroom-shaped projections 23 on the underside of the cap and spaced tapering extensions 20 in the skirt portion of the cap terminating in enlargements 22. The cap may be electrically coated with tin or dip coated in a molten aluminium bath before the light metal is cast against it. U.S.A. Specification 2,785,451 is referred to.
