[Also in Groups XXVI and XXVII] A ferrous metal insert in a light metal piston for a compression ignition engine is of greater breadth than depth, has a top portion, at least the top surface of which is exposed at the top surface of the piston, and a base which extends laterally outwardly beyond the top portion all round the latter, the part of said base having the greatest lateral-dimensions being wholly surrounded by the light metal of the piston, and said base having portions of the light metal overlying it to prevent removal of the insert. The insert 9 may protrude above the piston-head and include, on the axis of the piston, a blind hole 10 which serves to locate the insert in the mould, and also to receive a lathecentre when machining. The skirt 16 is cut away at diametrically opposite places 17 to prevent rotative displacement. The insert may be coated with, e.g., tin or zinc, or alternatively coated with molybdenum and then dipped in molten aluminium to form a coating before casting the piston therearound.
