Abstract
1366413 Pistons SEALED POWER CORP 3 Aug 1972 [19 Aug 1971] 36215/72 Heading F2T A piston 10 comprises a non-ferrous metal cylindrical body having at the outer periphery of its head end 34 a recess 44 defined by a frustoconical back wall 48 tapering away from the end 34 and a radial shoulder 44, and a onepiece ring-carrier band 38 of a ferrous metal shrink-fitted into the recess with a frusto-conical inner periphery in mating interference engagement with the back wall 48. The band 38 is fitted in the recess 44 by heating the band and packing the piston in dry ice, the mating frusto-conical walls preferably being at an angle of five degrees to the piston axis. A piston ring 22 is housed in a groove 42 in the band 38. The piston may be of magnesium or aluminium alloy and the band may be of cast iron containing 18% or more nickel, up to 7% copper and 1À75 to 4% chromium.
