Abstract

1,025,726. Casting metals. WELLWORTHY Ltd. Dec. 10, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 35661/63. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F2] A piston comprises a light metal skirt 9 with integral gudgeon pin bosses 7 and a crown 1 of ferrous metal or a heat-resisting alloy which is joined to the skirt and has integral extensions that surround the axis of the bosses 7 and are at least partially embedded in the bosses. As shown the extensions are pairs of struts 6 which extend between the crown and the bosses and terminate in integral rings 8 cast in the bosses. The crown has a flange 3 and the skirt is cast against the flange 3 and around the struts 6. The contacting surfaces of the crown and skirt may be provided with irregularities, e.g. projections and recesses to enhance the mechanical tie between them. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the cavity 12 between the underside of the crown and the flange 3, is filled with an extension of the skirt. The crown may be of steel or nickel alloy and the skirt may be of aluminium or aluminium alloy.
