Abstract
825,855. Pistons. STERLING ALUMINUM PRODUCTS Inc. April 24, 1956, No. 12570/56. Class 122 (1). [Also in Group XXII] In an aluminium or magnesium-alloy piston having a cast-in protector ring for its packing ring receiving groove walls of a metal harder than the piston, the protector ring extends continuously circumferentially around and within the alloy body and has recesses extending circumferentially along and through the protector ring, and the recesses are sufficiently large to permit the molten aluminium to flow therethrough so that, upon solidification, the aluminium will shrink radially inwardly on the protector ring to anchor the ring in the piston body. The ring, Fig. 2, has recesses 11 and projections 12 by which it is supported in the mould 13, Fig. 20, during casting of the piston. Alternatively the ring may comprise two rings 10, spot-welded together and which, when the piston-ring groove is machined into the piston, Fig. 22, protects both walls of the groove. In another embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7, alternate displaced parts 20, 21 protect both sides of the groove. Various other forms of protector rings are shown. Specification 409,841 is referred to.
