Abstract
980,576. Pistons. H. MAHLE, and E. MAHLE, [trading as MAHLE KOMM.-GES.]. Dec. 20, 1963 [Dec. 22, 1962], No. 50383/63. Heading F2T. [Also in Division B3] In a light metal piston the sides of a piston ring groove 21 are reinforced by annular inserts 16 and 17 which are embedded in the light metal and have a radial width less than the depth of the groove and axial projections 12 and 13 respectively which are of dovetail form in both the axial and radial directions. The projections 12 have radially inwardly tapering apertures 14 therein. An annular casting 1, Fig. 3, which may be of iron-nickel alloy, is cast or forged in the light metal body 2 during manufacture such that inserts 16, 17 remain after machining of the body.
