Abstract
1,028,847. Pistons. ZOLLNER CORPORATION. March 19. 1963, No. 10882/63. Heading F2T A piston has a substantially annular heatbarrier ring immovably incorporated in the annular land between the piston crown and the uppermost piston-ring groove. The piston may be of aluminium alloy and the barrier ring, of steel or non-ferrous metal, is preferably cast in situ in the piston head under radial compression at the time of moulding the piston. In Figs. 1 and 2, the barrier ring 25 is formed with inwardly projecting flanges 26, 2) alternately directed upwardly and downwardly and separated by notches 28, the opposed edges of each of which taper inwardly in partially converging fashion. In modifications (a) the upper and lower faces of the inwardly projecting flanges are coplanar; (b) the ring has no inner flanges, has coplanar upper and lower faces and may be provided with a tapered inner edge; (c) the ring, Fig. 10, has an inner undulated edge 37; (d) the upper and lower surfaces of the ring are tapered, Fig. 13, or its upper surface only is tapered; (e) the ring has an annular groove 48, Fig. 15, and coplanar edge portions. The inner edge or edge portions of the ring may be eccentrically formed with respect to the outer periphery of the ring.
