Abstract

588,322. Pistons. LISTER & CO., Ltd., R. A., and MORRIS, A. J. Feb. 8, 1945, No. 3243. [Class 122 (i)] An insert 20 of the shape shown is secured in an annular groove in the piston crown 16, the arrangement being such that the rate of heat conduction from the exposed surface 22 through the insert is less than that from the remainder of the exposed surface 18, due mainly to the discontinuity between the insert and the crown. The body and crown of the piston may be of cast ferrous metal and the insert is turned before casting, or may be of aluminium alloy, or steel, in which case the insert is formed of mild steel, stainless iron, austenitic irons and steel or silicon chrome steel.
