Abstract

1441984 Making pistons ASSOCIATED ENG FRANCE SA 14 March 1974 [15 March 1973] 12557/73 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] The walls of a piston ring groove 15 are lined with flat segmental plate 13 of wear-resistant material, secured by welding. Al alloy plates may be electron beam welded to an Al alloy piston containing less Si. Alternatively, mild steel or brass plates 13 are roll bonded to a Mg, Al alloy layer 17, which is electron beam welded to the Al alloy piston 12. The layer 17 may, alternatively, be formed on the plates 13 by spray deposition or plating. The ends of adjacent plates 13 may abut or overlap in various ways (19-23, Fig. 4, not shown). After welding, the plates 13 are machined.
