Abstract
1,265,820. Making pistons; welding by fusion. KARL SCHMIDT G.m.b.H. 19 Sept., 1969 [28 Sept., 1968], No. 46346/69. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] An element of iron, steel or titanium is charged particle or laser beam welded to a light metal alloy, I.C. engine piston, body with the interposition of a light metal piece. An iron, steel or titanium element, which may comprise a ring carrier, heat insulating plate, piston head combustion chamber edge reinforcement, or upper piston part, may be welded to the piston body with the interposition of a transition piece comprising a light metal piece plated with steel or titanium, the plating facing the element. Two weld seams one on each side of the plated piece may be formed in a single pass by controlling the beam by magnetic deflection or in a pulsating manner. In an electron beam welding example, a plated transition piece, between a piston body of AlSil2NiMg and an element of Ni-resist (R.T.M.), comprises 1À6 mm. steel and 1À6 mm. AlSi alloy containing 0À3% Si. Armouring (e.g. for ring slots) may be provided as a plating of steel or titanium on a light metal piece, a surface of the light metal of said piece being welded to a surface of the piston body. The plating may be provided (e.g. by electroplating) with a wear-resistant layer.
