Abstract
853,382. Making pistons and cylinders; welding by fusion. MAHLE, E., and MAHLE, H., [trading as MAHLE KOMM.-GES:]. June 5, 1957 [July 14, 1956], No. 17864/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVI] A closed annular duct 1 is provided in a light metal piston, Fig. 1, or cylinder, Fig. 5, by forming an open annular groove, closing the open side of the groove with a closure-ring 2 fitted into a widened portion of the groove and sealing by depositing light metal 3 by fusion welding, the deposited metal being welded to the walls of the groove but not to the closure-ring 2. The piston or cylinder with the open duct is formed by forging or pressing. To ensure that the deposit 3 is not welded to the ring 2, the welding torch may be appropriately manipulated, the ring may be of a material such as steel not weldable to light metal or the ring may be covered with a substance such as graphite. The annular duct 1 may be divided by pins 4 pressed into bores in the piston. The ring 2 is preferably tubular but for use in a cylinder the ring may have an open section. The ring is split and itsends are joined by a sleeve.
